How to repaint a kids bookcase into pastel pink color?

I am buying a bookcase with rugged Baltic birch construction that has a smooth UV finish. I want to repaint it to light pink color to match her room. What is the easiest way to do it, please advise.

First you should rough up the surface of the shelf with sandpaper, then paint on a primer, which will help the paint stick, then paint the shelf pink.
Reply:Yeah, if you want it to last, do it right - prepare the piece by sanding it!

I highly recommend General Finishes water based Milk paints. Water based is definitely the way to go for a safer, healthier finish. They do have a great light pink called Little Pink. Look here - http://www.generalfinishes.com/finishes/...
Reply:It sounds to me like anything you paint it with now would just scratch off easily, because the smooth finish is supposed to do that. To repaint it and actually have it stick you probably have to strip it. But if you don't mind doing touchups when its scratches of, I would say paint it and do touchups when needed.
Reply:First lightly sand the surface to scuff it up a bit. I say again lightly sand, you do not want to leave sanding lines rather just remove the sheen. You can also do this with steel wool OO or OOO is what I would use.

Wipe it down with a tack cloth to remove any dust residue from sanding.

Then it would be best if you put on a coat of primer. Let the primer dry at least as long as recommended on the can before you paint.

VERY lightly sand the primer to remove any rough spots and go over it again with a tack cloth.

Put on at least one coat of a good enamel paint. I would put on two coats of paint. Sand the surface with OOOO grade steel wool between coats and use tack cloth again before painting again.
Reply:My husband and I just moved into our place and we bought some used furniture to fix and use. From what I know, you sand the bookcase down, primer it first, then paint it not once but twice to give it a good finish. You could add a clean coat to it. Depends on what paint you use.
Reply:you will have to strip it and sand it or the color wont stick, also make sure you use a primer... There really isn't an easy way to do it...only the right way, trust me you will not be happy with the results if you do it any other way! Good luck1
Reply:I guess I just don't understand....you don't say it is any color at all....so just paint it pink...might take 2 coats. I like the little rollers....there are those for cabinet painting....I would use those.
Reply:Maybe sand it a little and then clean the dust before you paint.
