Does anyone know how the pink mold in showers originated?

My mom heard on the news once that the pink mold that is in the shower started by the government testing something (don't have specifics). To dispose of it they dumped it over the SanFrancisco Bay area and further North. Many deaths were caused from this dumping. But, what we're trying to find are the facts. Anyone know about this? Anyone even hear about it?

While some forms of mold can be pink what most people commonly find is pink algae. Both can easily be killed with a 10% bleach solution.





In regards to the Government testing that your mother is referring to, I have lived in the SF bay area for over 40 years and I have never heard of testing / dumping or deaths due to pink mold

Reply:I never saw the pink mold until about 5 years ago (I'm in Texas) and actually thought, at first, that it was caused by the Caress bath soap I was using. Don't know what causes it, but am curious to see the other answers, because I find it odd that I am 51 years old and had never seen it before.
Reply:Bleach gets it right out.Try to do this once a month to keep it clean.





I'm afraid I don't know where it comes from but I'm in Ireland and somehow I doubt our government is doing anything dangerous!It's probably from chemicals in the shampoo and shower gel.

I'm just an hour NE of San Francisco... so the theory could be true. Oh my.
