What do pink elephants have to do with alcohol, where did this originate?

I've never been drunk before, but obviously alcohol isn't a hallucinogenic, since Absinthe (supposedly) is and people make a big deal about that.

So if alcohol isn't hallucinogenic, whats the deal with pink elephants? How did that cliche get started? What are they symbolic of?

What do pink elephants have to do with alcohol, where did this originate?
Dumbo and Timothy Q. Mouse get drunk off Champagne, Dumbo dreams about pink elephants and wakes up in a tree with some stero-typed crows in Walt Disney's "DUMBO". This movie was made in 1941, so maybe ?
